Shabbat Babayit (Shabbat in the Home) and Havdalah Babayit

Friday, April 4, 2025 6 Nisan 5785

6:00 PM - 8:30 PMAND SATURDAY April 5 - Various locations and times

Shabbat Babayit ("Shabbat in the Home") provides an opportunity for connection by sharing a Shabbat meal with others in a welcoming home hosted by members of our community. There are also options to share dinner and celebrate Havdalah.  We hope you'll take this opportunity to create new friendships!  Former hosts and those who have already attended these dinners are encouraged to join us again!

SHABBAT DINNERS HOSTED BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS

We've included information about our five featured dinners, including our hosts' general location, meal preferences, and interests. We omitted other details, such as the exact address and the names of our hosts for security purposes—this information will be e-mailed to you closer to the dates of the actual dinners.  We encourage you to make your selection based on the locale and interests of our hosts and be open to meeting new people.

Thank you to our hosts of Shabbat Babayit and Havdalah Babayit who are helping us with opportunities for members to create new connections and share the beauty of Shabbat and Havdalah!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SELECTION

After reviewing each of the Shabbat and Havdalah dinners below, offered on April 4 and 5, click on the link provided and register. Upon registration you will receive confirmation of the specific dinner you are attending. As we get closer to April 4, we will provide you with additional details, including the identity of your hosts!

If you have any trouble registering, please contact the office at (303)-388-4441 or office@bnaihavurah.org), or Laurie Cohn (laurie@bnaihavurah.org).

The dinners for Shabbat and Havdalah Babayit will accommodate anywhere from 4 to 10 guests, so we encourage you to register soon.

INCLUSIVITY

We include and celebrate all of our community members. Some homes may not be fully accessible to those who use a cane or wheelchair.  Also, not all community members have a means of transportation to dinner. If you have questions regarding the accessibility of a home or need a lift, don't hesitate to contact Director of Administration Laura Intfen (director@bnaihavurah.org) or Laurie Cohn (laurie@bnaihavurah.org).

There is no cost to attend this event, though some of our dinners request that guests bring a dish to share. Given that there are a limited number of "seats at the table," we suggest you sign up soon. And, if you find that the dinner you hoped to attend is full, you have three options: sign up for a different dinner; add your name on the waiting list for the dinner you hoped to attend; or wait until the next time we offer Shabbat and Havdalah Babayit.

Dinner One
Shabbat Babayit - Park Hill
Friday, April 4 – 6:00 pm

We have lived in our Park Hill bungalow for almost 40 years and have filled it with art, antiques, music and memorabilia from our travels. We are avid gardeners, readers (three book clubs!) and spooky movie watchers. You’ll find parking on the street. There are five steps up to our front porch, so, unfortunately, our home is not accessible for those who use a wheelchair or walker. And because our house is small, we have a 6-person limit at our table.   We will serve a chicken and potato casserole and a bean side dish.  We’ll talk with our guests to discuss what they would like to contribute to our dinner.  We (and our 2 cats Otis and Millicent) welcome you to our home with joy.  This dinner is for those 18 and over. This is our second Babayit hosting, we liked the first so much.  Please join us!

Dinner Two
Shabbat Babayit - Southmoor
Friday, April 4 – 6:00 pm

We are both retired, which gives us more time to entertain--one of our favorite past-times -- in our mid-century modern home. Sitting around the table talking to people we know or are just meeting is our idea of a perfect evening. For those who come, we will be serving chicken with white wine  mushroom sauce, a pasta or rice, and the other requisite sides--a salad, a veggie, and  bread. Dessert will most likely be a fruit galette. Guests do not need to bring a thing.

Our home has three shallow steps from the front hall to the living room. Otherwise it is easy to navigate. Guests can park in our circular driveway or on the street. There will be a full bar, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.  We can host 6 people besides ourselves and look forward to sharing Shabbat with our guests.  This dinner is for those 18 and over.  (P.S. We have an extremely sociable small English Bulldog, who is kenneled if she gets too friendly.)  We hope you will join us!

Dinner Three
Shabbat Babayit - West Highlands
Friday, April 4 — 5:30 pm

Our Shabbat Babayit dinner will be very casual for 6 adult guests. If the weather accommodates, we will dine on the patio and roast hot dogs (beef, turkey, and a vegan choice) over the pit, otherwise indoors will be fajitas with beef, chicken, and tofu. Guests may bring desserts. We are retired seniors who follow current events, and like to hike/walk, and dining out. He is a maker and plays golf, she is a creator and plays games.
We have 11 gentle steps into the house for fajitas and no steps to the patio for hot dogs. If you need a rail to help up the stairs you can come to our back door (let us know). We are looking forward to this dinner because we enjoy meeting new people; we hope you’ll join us!

Dinner Four
Havdalah Babayit - Crestmoor
Saturday, April 5 — 6:00 pm

Join us for a warm and welcoming Havdalah gathering in our home in the Crestmoor neighborhood, just north of B’nai East! With our kids off at college for a few years now, we’re excited to host small, meaningful gatherings filled with good food, engaging conversation, and a sense of community.

We’ll start the evening with snacks and mingling before sitting down to enjoy a flavorful Mediterranean chicken dish. At the right moment, we’ll pause for Havdalah, bringing a special touch to the evening as we welcome the new week.

We’ll coordinate with guests to organize salads and/or vegetable sides, and dessert. We’re very familiar with dietary restrictions and will work with guests to ensure everyone can enjoy.

Parking is easy, with space in our driveway or on the street. Our home has a couple of steps at the entrance, so it should be accessible for those using a cane or walker, though wheelchair access is challenging. We also share our home with a friendly, affectionate dog who loves meeting new people.

We will host six adult guests and children are welcome as long as they are fairly self-sufficient. While our own kids are grown, we still have some leftover supplies and toys that may be useful.

We’re excited to open our home and welcome you to share in a wonderful meal and good company. Please join us!

Dinner Five
Havdalah Babayit - Baker
Saturday, April 5 - 6:00 pm

Our Havdalah gathering will be informal and cozy; we'll make a hearty veggie soup or stew and ask guests to bring sides or desserts. (If you have dietary restrictions, we'll try to accommodate you, just let us know.) We'll have a short singing Havdalah celebration and beyond that, who knows? Lively discussion will ensue, and music will be playing. We can host 10 guests, and share our urban home with two delightful cats. As for accessibility: getting into our home involves a few steps--you're probably okay with a cane, but not a wheelchair. Parking on our block is not the easiest, but shouldn't be a problem early on a Saturday evening.

Children are welcome and we hope you will join us!
