Rabbi Bec Richman will share with us her own words of Torah in her D’var Torah entitled “Torah in Our Hands: Lessons from the Physical Scroll.”
Lunch and Learn: The Art of Torah
After services, we’ll learn together while sharing a lunch of Snarf's sandwiches (box lunches) and potluck sides/desserts. Grab some food and shmooze for a few minutes before settling into a guided exploration of the practical and spiritual laws and guidelines that govern and orient a scribe’s work. We will learn all about the practical bits of scribing and repairing sacred texts. What is parchment made of? What can you write with? What do you need to do in preparation for writing? What are the rules of writing? What happens when you inevitably make a mistake? What is the relationship between the mind and the body in scribing an ancient, sacred, living text? Come to explore these questions and more together.
Childcare provided upon request.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Rabbi Bec Richman (she/her) is a mama, soferet (Torah scribe), and potter who serves on the faculty of the Jewish Studio Project. Her art and facilitation are rooted in the belief that creativity is inherently accessible, healing, and liberatory. A graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Bec lives in Cleveland Heights, OH with her partner and kiddos.
Rabbi Richman joins our community for the weekend of March 8-10 for a scribal artist residency. Together, we will learn about the role of women in scribing sacred texts, the exacting and expansive work of scribes, the practicalities of writing and repairing sacred texts, and the spiritual connections between scribing and our daily lives.
WE HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US!
